Fasnet Rennen
Während Deutsche sich unter Fasnet üblicherweise Narren (an
Fasnacht) vorstellen, weiß so gut wie jeder maritime Brite, dass
Fasnet mit dem Fasnet Race zu tun hat. Die 608 Seemeilen lange
Regatta startet aus dem Solent vor Cowes (Isle of Wight), umrun-
det den Fastnet-Felsen vor der südwestlichen Küste von Irland
und kommt dann südlich der Scilly-Inseln an der Spitze Cornwalls
zurück in die Hafenstadt Plymouth. Das mehrtägige Rennen ist
unter anderem für schwere Havarien (mehr als ein Dutzend Segler
und Retter ertranken schon) sowie für Flauten und extreme Wetter-
lagen berühmt, berüchtigt.
Fasnet Race
While Germans usually imagine carnival fools under this heading,
almost every maritime Britain knows that Fasnet refers to the Fas-
net race. The 608 nautical mile race starts from Cowes on the So-
lent (Isle of Wight), circles the Fastnet rock off the southwest coast
of Ireland and then comes south of the Scilly Islands on the tip of
Cornwall back to the port of Plymouth. The multi-day race is noto-
rious, among other things, for severe damage (more than a dozen
sailors and rescuers have drowned), and for both becalmed and
extreme weather conditions.
