László's answer seemed simple enough. When I asked about the unusually sloping front of the bus, he smiled and called it “Hungarian design.” Only later did I realise he was joking. After driving through the streets of Budapest, he suddenly headed down a steep ramp and into the Danube. Water splashed high against the sides of the bus. Some passengers screamed, others shouted "wow", and within seconds our bus had become a boat.
László was not just a bus driver. He was a storyteller with a mischievous sense of humour and an obvious passion for Budapest.
When I first boarded his unusual vehicle, I noticed its strangely sloping front and asked why it looked more like a boat than a bus. Without hesitation, he smiled and replied, “Hungarian design.” The answer drew laughter from the passengers, and the tour continued through the streets of Budapest.
As we drove along the Danube, László pointed out landmarks and shared stories about the city. Everything seemed perfectly normal until he suddenly turned towards a steep ramp leading down to the river.
For a brief moment, the passengers fell silent.
Then the bus entered the water.
Spray shot up alongside the windows. Some passengers screamed, others laughed, and many simply stared in disbelief. Within seconds, the vehicle was no longer a bus but a boat gliding across the Danube.
Only then did everyone understand László's earlier joke.
What impressed me most was not the amphibious vehicle itself, but the driver's calm confidence. For him, driving from a city street into a river was simply part of another working day. For the rest of us, it was an unforgettable experience.
From the water, Budapest revealed a different face. The famous bridges, historic buildings and riverbanks looked even more impressive when viewed from the middle of the Danube. What began as a sightseeing tour became one of the most entertaining and unexpected travel experiences of our visit.
